On October 24, PAGE students lived history for one night by participating in the PAGE camp out. Students learned how to throw tomahawks with Mr. Brandenburg, how to crosscut saw with Mrs. Utnage, and how to load and fire a Civil War musket with Mr. Duane Clark. Students spoke with many reenactors of history at their stations. The list includes: Craig Baumgardner– cannon, Lee Downey – Civil War surgeon, 50th Virginia Co. D Captain Jim Lemon – general Civil War information, 50th Virginia 1st Sergeant Duane Clark Civil War weapons, Julie DuVall – Civil War Sanitary commission, Joyce Lundy – cooking in the 1700’s, Grant Loy – gardening and growing crops in Revolutionary time period.
Students experienced many activities just like the American settlers they read about in their US history book. Students ate stew and baked apples out of tin cans for supper. They competed in the tug of war, the sack relay race, and the 3 leg relay race. They slept out over night and returned the next day to go to school. Ask a PAGE student about their favorite part of the camp out.
