Gabe, a sixth grader at DeKalb Middle School, researched aquaponics, which is the combined study of aquaculture and hydroponics, to create a self cleaning fish bowl. He designed a system for optimal growth for both the plants and fish. Gabe decided to do this project because it combined his love of engineering, gardening, and fishing.
He started his project in the fall and completed it during Christmas break. The experiment included tests on fish bowls with one, two, and three fish. The testing bowls use plants to filter the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates from the fish water to maintain a safe environment for the fish. The control bowls did not include plants. After 30 days, the bowl with one fish and plants maintained a safe environment proving that plants can be used to keep the fish bowl clean and help the plants grow.
Great work, Gabe!
