Any 6th, 7th, or 8th-grade student who is interested in singing, acting, dancing, or being part of the stage crew is invited to be a part of DeKalb Middle School’s yearly musical. Membership in choir is helpful but not required. Typically, our musicals involve over 60 students. Practices are after school, and auditions are approximately three months prior to the performance.
These productions combine acting and vocal performance. They have ranged from full-length Broadway musicals to audience participation mysteries, and engage the audience with interesting scenery and fun costuming. The musical provides students an opportunity to take their performance skills to levels beyond classroom experiences and to learn valuable interpersonal skills in the process.
DMS also offers a Stagecraft class that focuses on both sides of the theater spectrum developing onstage and offstage skills. Stagecraft meets during the school day and students develop work on tone, voice, and public speaking during the first nine weeks. Students gain off stage skills like set design and creation and costume design during the second nine weeks.
