6/7/8 Grade Choir

DeKalb Middle School offers choir for 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students, with different required mastery at each level.

Sixth-grade choir students learn the basics of reading music, vocal technique, solfege, ear training, music appreciation, and performance skills.  Seventh and eighth-grade choir students focus on intermediate and advanced levels of these same concepts. Students who participate in choir have the opportunity to participate in ISSMA solo and ensemble, Circle the State with Song, and All-State Honor Choir (if nominated), which allow them to further advance their vocal skills, and potentially sing alongside talented students from around the state!

No auditions are required for these classes. All students are required to sing at multiple performances throughout the year, which vary depending on the ensemble.

Midpoint (Show Choir - 7th/8th)

Midpoint is DeKalb Middle School's curricular show choir. This is an auditioned group of 7th and 8th-grade students who perform at many school and community functions, including local show choir/jazz festivals and the DeKalb County Fair. Midpoint also sings the National Anthem at the TinCaps in the spring. This is a class that gives vocalists the opportunity to build on their prior knowledge of choral singing, with enhanced emphasis on choreography and musical expression.

Midpoint rehearses during the school day, with multiple required performances outside of school. Auditions are held every May, with results posted before summer break.

Harmonix

Harmonix is DeKalb Middle School’s extracurricular choir. This is an auditioned group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who learn music at a fast pace, and perform at a variety of choral and community events, including Christmas caroling downtown Fort Wayne. Harmonix sings in a variety of musical styles, ranging from traditional choral repertoire and a cappella works to pop and jazz tunes.

Harmonix rehearses once a week after school, with multiple required performances outside of school; auditions are held every August.
