Family Friday Five

DMS Principal's Weekly Newsletter

Student Success Time

Our clubs launched at DMS this week during Student Success Time, and the students were very excited!

Each 9 weeks, students get to choose a club to participate in! Today we offered our students 39 different clubs including United Way Club, Game Club, Guitar Club, Musical Club, Dice Club, IU Club ---- and more!

The goal is to give students an opportunity to learn alongside a staff member! They can sketch, style hair, play games, debate, learn sign language --- so many different opportunities to grow and learn!

Upcoming Events

Monday, September 1 is LABOR DAY! No school that day! Enjoy time with family and friends.

Friday, September 5 are PICTURE RETAKES! If you would like to have your student's picture retaken, please remind them to dress accordingly that day!

Clash of the Competencies

The Portrait Pursuit is an interactive, real-world leadership competition. Over the school year, DMS students will train in the Portrait of a Baron competencies: Adaptability, Perseverance, Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Empathy, and Integrity.

From August through April, students will focus on one Portrait of a Baron competency each month. They will compete as grade levels and in SST.

All of this work will prepare students for the Portrait Pursuit: Clash of the Competencies Gauntlet in May, where they will showcase their skills in one big competition!

We are inviting business leaders, community members, and professionals to be part of the Portrait Pursuit: Clash of the Competencies Gauntlet on May 15 at DMS.

Volunteers will serve as judges, mentors, and encouragers as students rotate through high-energy stations testing their PoB competencies!
Your presence shows our students that their community values leadership, character, and hard work—and it gives them invaluable real-world feedback from people they look up to.

College Go Week

Our Guidance Department will be sponsoring College Go Week - encouraging our students to look into their future to explore if they are interested in college!

The Guidance Department would like to provide some items for our students in celebration of that week and are looking to see if anyone is interested in:

----> Donating Baron sunglasses
----> Donating DONUTS!

Reach out to Tricia Sutton (tsutton@dekalbcentral.net) if you have any ideas!

Questions to ask your student...

  1. What game did we play in Morning Meeting on Friday?
  2. What club did you attend during SST?
  3. What was your favorite activity in class this week?
  4. Who is currently your favorite teacher? Why?
  5. We recently elected our student council president! Who did you vote for?
