This week, our students took a closer look at something they use every day but probably rarely think about: the people behind our technology.
We talked about everything our DeKalb Central Technology Department does to keep our schools connected—from supporting Chromebooks and internet access to managing digital tools, systems, and security. Students quickly realized that what looks like “just Wi-Fi” or “just a Chromebook” actually requires an entire team of people working behind the scenes.
We also connected this conversation to something we've been intentional about at DMS this year: using less technology when less is better. As we read The Amazing Generation, we've talked about the impact of constant connectivity and why we've made the decision to eliminate personal smart devices and intentionally incorporate more paper, reading, writing, and face-to-face conversation into our school day.
These ideas aren't contradictory. Technology is an incredibly important tool—but it is a tool. Our goal isn't to use more technology or less technology. Our goal is to use technology intentionally and choose the right tool for the job.
We challenged our students to think like Barons: When does technology help me learn? When does it get in the way? What can I do better without a screen?
That's the kind of digital wisdom we want our students to develop—not simply knowing how to use technology, but knowing when, why, and when not to use it.
Choose the right tool. Be intentional. Be present. Be curious.
