Beginning Band
The Beginning Band Course takes students with different musical backgrounds and begins them on a band instrument. The students learn to read music and play the instrument on a basic skill level. There are three performances during the year. Continued participation every nine weeks in this program is determined by passing grades in band and required courses; this will be re-evaluated each semester.
Advanced Band
Advanced band is for students with two years of band experience or teacher approval. The class improves the basic skills learned in sixth and seventh grade while also teaching new intermediate concepts. Performances include concerts and festivals. Continued participation every nine weeks in this program is determined by passing grades in band and other required courses, re-evaluated each semester.
Intermediate Band
Intermediate band is for students with one year of band experience or teacher approval. The class improves the basic skills learned in sixth grade and teaches new intermediate concepts. Performances include concerts and festivals. Continued participation every nine weeks in this program is determined by passing grades in band and the required other courses.
Jazz Band
Jazz Band is an auditioned ensemble of students in 7th and 8th grades. Jazz Band provides the opportunity for advanced students to learn and perform in a jazz ensemble setting. Students will learn to play in the four major stylistic genres of Swing, Rock, Ballads, and Latin. Members will begin introductory instruction in jazz improvisation and gain fundamental knowledge of chord and scale relationships. Students will perform at several concerts, contests, and as a pep band at several athletic events. All members of this ensemble (except piano, guitar, and bass members of the rhythm section) will need to be in a current concert band. Continued participation in this program is determined by passing grades in band and other required courses, re-evaluated each semester.
Pep Band
The DMS Pep Band brings energy and school spirit to our winter basketball games! Open to band students who want to share their music outside the classroom, the Pep Band plays upbeat songs that get the crowd involved and cheer on our teams.
Participating in Pep Band is a fun way for students to build their musical skills, perform for a live audience, and be part of the excitement of Baron athletics. Together, they help create a lively, spirited atmosphere that makes game nights even more memorable.
